New 3D models of the project

Above are the latest 3D models of the FYP2 project. The images with the colorful items was how I first intended the outcome to be. Then it evolved gradually to the ones (the images with less color) below it.

Despite all that, the finalized design is still yet to be confirmed as the technical part of the project has yet to be determined or refined.

Though what has been decided was:

- The application is about teaching Wushu basics for beginners in the martial art:
- The 4 main stance + common hand gestures

- There would be only one projector involved.
- A monitor may be needed to stream the video or videos
- May need to create a Flash video player
- Need more videos ASAP

Things still in consideration:

- The size of the metal frame and whether to make it more like a 'porch' or 'foyer' / 'atrium' roofed area rather than an open-ended box
- Whether the projector will project the footing or the videos
- The color of the area and deco
- Whether or not to use a game joystick or create a touch screen for the navigation
-Whether or not a PC is needed at all and ... instead I use a different medium such as a mini home theater system (just a thought)

Plus there is another version plan which has yet to added which I drew earlier today (which can be seen above).

New Sketches and Proposed Idea

My proposed topic before was Wushu Staff, and since I did not want to stray from that topic, that's where the mind-map above came about. The initial plan was to list out and narrow down the possible and simpler topics in Wushu.

Though I was on leave and had a lot of time to do things, things got more and more confusing.

Below would be the few things that was discussed with Mr.Rozi when I consulted him during my leave.

From what was shown above, discussion with a friend and after sometime pondering, the very rough drawing of the exterior was developed.

As explained in the earlier post, the application would be like a box where the user has to go in and out of.
Inside, there were to be objects the user could interact with resulting in the application being fully manual and physical rather than digital based.

In the end, the idea is still pending and more ways to continue evolving this idea in the simplest way possible is still underway.

Also the purposes of the application is to:
- Educate and Introduce users to Wushu
- Let them experience easy Wushu movements
- Get them to understand Wushu
- etc...

That's all for now,

Old Sketches and Old Ideas

The images shown above would be sketches from my FYP 1 last year. They give a rough idea of what I was planning before and how I pictured the potential outcome to be.

As can be seen, the way it was designed, made it look 'website'-ish as explained in my earlier post. Which eventually was a big turn-off. From there I had to re-design everything, leading to the more adorable characters, as the initial audience were children.

Now below, as my first idea had to be improved and due to lack of time and skills, I had to re-think my idea. Even then however, I was too cocky and had big ideas and yet no skills to implement them.
Below would be how I intended my application to be during exhibition week.

My initial idea was to make the application interactive with Flash and Zone Trigger. Which would lead a user to stand or do motion in the area of the application, where the motion of the user is captured and from there they interact with the various links provided on the screen.

It seemed like a good idea and I even thought of adding a mini-game, videos and character info. Though again, I lacked the skills in scripting and could not understand what I was doing.

As can be seen,  the user would stand in the wide area, where a webcam (though not seen in the image), would have captured the user's motion and then use the motion as a cursor. It looks simple enough though, the implementation was a little tricky and difficult.

Plus getting the necessary equipment would have been very costly.

My new idea is somewhat similar, though the only changes would be:

 - Instead of an open area,  it would look like an open-ended box (more sketches would be put up later)
- The user interaction would be somewhat more physical (still working out the best approach)
- There would be more and better decoration to suit the 'environment' or 'ambiance' of the application
- There may or may not be a web-cam involved

These are a few more reference I found on either Yahoo.com or Google.com.
Most of them were used more as a guide in creating the characters before.

References and Sketches - 1

Below are some references and old sketches from my previous FYP2. There weren't many sketches but there were alot of other references... such as:
- AsiaPac Culture and Beijing Press Martial Arts books
- Photos and Videos taken of the MMU Cyber Wushu club
- Online references from Websites
- Video, PC and Nintendo DS game references
- Serei no Moribito, Pokemon & Digimon Japanese Anime
- Chinese Martial Arts Movies - 'Fearless', 'Forbidden Kingdom', 'Storm Riders'...
- Chinese & Taiwanese TV Series - 'Legend of the Condor Heroes','Journey to the West', 'State of Divinity', 'Treasure Venture / Sword Girl', ...

I chose 'Wushu' as my topic due to these reasons:
- Long term interest since Primary school (when I started watching Chinese TV Series)
- The need to share knowledge of Wushu with everyone
- To show that Wushu has its perks and advantages
- To reveal the fun and exciting side of Wushu
