Assignment 3 : Creating a New Media Work

Mina and Lena

1. There once lived a mermaid, in a shell behind a great waterfall. Her name was Mina and she loved to sing.

2. She was a healer and many came to her to be healed.

3. In a field of flowers down the river lived a fairy. Her name was Lena and she loved to dance.

4. She was wise and always sought for advice.

5. Mina and Lena lived on opposite ends of the forest.

6. Both filled the forest with song and laughter.

7. As Mina sang the fishes and ducks would dance.

8. As Lena danced, the birds and bees would sing.

9. It is a wonder how they had never met. Not till one day...

10. A great storm raged through the forest.

11. It tore Mina from the shore and Lena from her perch in a tree.

12. Tried with all their might, they could not fight against the storm and were carried far away from their homes.

13. When the storm finally died, Mina awoke by the river side. But where was Lena?

14. Noticing that she was lost, Mina wept.

15. Lo! As she cried Mina had begun to glow and so did her surroundings till it formed a bubble before her.

16. Blinded at first Mina looked away but when she faced the light, a fairy appeared within the bubble.

17. It was Lena! Gently as the bubble disappeared, Mina caught and cradled Lena in her arms.

18. Once more the river began to glow, though this time it surrounded them both. It was a magnificent sight.

19. The blinding glow swirled around them. Making them one.

20. When the light dimmed, Mina and Lena had become, Marina. A fairy mermaid.

21. The river then carried her home to her cave on a large wave.

22. From that very day, the legacy of Mina and Lena lived on. In Marina.

23. With song and dance.

Intention statement & reflection

For this assignment, I decided to make a short web comic with the short story, ‘Mina and Lena’.
It was to be set on either my original webpage or a simple interactive flash one. As the story was very short, I only managed to do 6 pages worth of visuals. It may have not been enough but I hope it was. The reason I chose to do a web comic was because I enjoy reading comics and it is very popular amongst youngsters now, especially interactive web comics as graphic novels, Japanese manga and online comics are very accessible and much more popular than normal novels. I used what I learned with my previous degree and my love for writing and drawing to produce this current work. I provided the story above

My main intention was to try and produce a short comic with this story and to see how the story went in showing visuals rather than using imagination. As there are many artists and fan artists around, I drew my inspiration from there and old cartoons I used to watch as a child. As the story was simple, I drew the drawings to match, though it is a plain black and white comic. It is meant to be done on an interactive website, but as time is of the essence it was not to be. As this work was quite rushed and does need a lot of time to do, I would strive to do a better one in the future.
